Imagine a three-year-old little boy, blessed to spend his summers playing among the tide pools and forests of the Pacific Northwest. When a truck driver dumped nuclear waste nine miles from the little boy’s home, he began his central life journey – to study natural systems and discover practical solutions to pressing environmental challenges.

Nutiva’s history is deeply rooted in hemp, which stemmed from that little boy, founder John Roulac, who started Nutiva with 500 Hemp Bars, sold out of the back of his car.

Nutiva founder, John Roulac, in 2002.

John has been a passionate advocate of holistic living for more than twenty years, working in the areas of whole foods, natural healing, organic farming, forestry, water and energy conservation, recycling and composting, and hemp agriculture. Founding Nutiva was a natural extension of John’s dream of a society that places people above profits, one where access to wholesome and organic food is a God-given right for people everywhere.

In 1994, long before hemp was what it is today, John founded Hemptech.com, a leading portal site for the industry with news and a hemp products directory and published six books and reports on hemp.

Later, in 1999, he founded Nutiva and America’s first hempfood bar and successfully challenged the US DEA’s attempt to embargo legal hemp foods.

John’s work in the hemp industry has gone far beyond Hemptech.com and Nutiva. He was a founding member of the following four non-profits: Arroyo Seco Council (1989), Forest Forever (1990), North American Industrial Hemp Council (1996), and Fiber Futures (1997). Additionally, he has sat on the following Board of Directors and Committees: State of California Industrial Hemp Advisory Board (2017 – Presenta), North American Industrial Hemp Council (1997 – 2001), California Composting Council (1994), and Eco-home (1987 – 1989).

John has fought tooth and nail to bring it home, growing the Nutiva organic hemp on US soil, and now we have.
Additionally, at Nutiva, we have donated $1MM to hemp advocacy through our 1% Program.

We are excited to debut our USA-Grown Organic Hempseed, the first USDA Certified Organic hempseed product grown entirely in the United States from a national organic brand.

Nutiva’s hemp is always organic – no pesticides or chemical fertilizers used in the growing process.

The new USA-Grown Organic Hempseed still has all the same benefits, only now it’s produced in Colorado, on our land in the United States.

It is USDA Certified Organic, Non-GMO Project Verified and vegan. It also contains 10 grams of protein, three grams of omega-3s, and 500 milligrams of omega GLA, plus 50 percent of the recommended daily value of magnesium and 20 percent of the recommended daily value of iron per serving.

John Roulac stated,

“We were the first organic hempseed brand on the market and have advocated and battled for industrial hemp for nearly 20 years, so we’re proud to launch our groundbreaking organic shelled hempseed product, the first that’s grown entirely in the United States from a national organic brand. Our new USA-Grown Organic Hempseed and Organic Plant Protein Superfood Smoothies continue our dedication to bring nutrient-dense organic foods like hemp and plant-based protein made without chemicals or GMOs to all Americans, while supporting the U.S. hemp farmers here at home.”

So that’s exactly what we did at Nutiva. We brought it home, and now we’re ready to share with you.

The USA-Grown Organic Hempseed is available in 10-oz and 24-oz bags via Nutiva.com, through Amazon, and will be available on shelves nationwide.

Grab your bag(s), and add to smoothies, hummus, yogurt, pesto, salad dressings and more, or enjoy as a great topping on salads, fruit, soup, oatmeal, cereals, and vegetables for a superfood boost.
